Berlin Academy trains ministries from over 100 countries about renewable energy
The Renewables Academy launches new courses in the context of TREE 2010
For today's launch event for the TREE Project (Transfer Renewable Energy & Efficiency) 2010, diplomatic representatives from the more than 100 countries who will be participating in this year's TREE training courses on renewable energy met at RENAC in Berlin.
In his opening speech, Director General Climate Protection, Environment and Energy of the Federal Environment Ministry Dr. Urban Rid highlighted the way in which TREE was an example of how the knowledge and skills available in Germany in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources could be disseminated to international participants, and how international networking between experts and decision makers could be encouraged.
On behalf of the representatives of the TREE countries, the Philippine ambassador to Germany, Her Excelency Delia Domingo-Albert, then gave a speech in which she praised the way in which the accelerated development of sustainable energy in partner countries was being promoted through the TREE education program.
TREE is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the International Climate Initiative, following a resolution of the German Bundestag. The project has been awarded the UN Decade Award for Sustainable Development.
TREE implements the know-how transfer that is necessary for establishing policy frameworks and funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency. The project trains key international stakeholders from government ministries, financial providers and project developers. Once again RENAC will be accepting applications for TREE Seminar Scholarships for the technology-specific education program between now and 30 April. The coverage of the TREE seminars extends from courses in Berlin, through training on funding and solar thermal power plants in selected target countries, up to distance learning and publications. In the week seminars TREE examines the life cycle of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies from legal, technical and commercial perspectives.
Capacity building is also one of the major tasks of IRENA – International Renewable Energy Agency-founded by Germany in January 2009. The Tree project is a good example of knowledge transfer and capacity building. The TREE experience is useful to IRENA: particularly the developing and emerging countries which have joined it can participate. Furthermore the program targets countries of the MENA region and countries of the first phase of the project TREE.
